Sustainability… it’s not a buzzword, it’s how we do things.
Looking after the environment and the communities around us is part of who we are.
Growing up by the sea, we've seen first-hand the impact of human activity on the places we love. From litter scattered along the shoreline to decades-old plastic packaging washing up on our beaches, it's hard to ignore the mark we're leaving behind.
We vowed that would never be us.
That's why we've built sustainability into the way we do business. From cutting down on waste and reducing emissions to making more responsible purchasing choices and supporting independent local businesses, we're always looking for ways to do things better.
Our aim is simple: tread a little lighter, support the places we call home and leave every spot we visit a little better than we found it.
Did we mention we are from the South-West?
Yeah, we know, we don’t stop mentioning we are from the best place in the UK!
After graduating university, we watched as many of our friends headed straight to London. But we’ve always believed the West Country has something special to offer, and we’ve made it our mission to shout about it!
We aim to source 90% of our products from small, independent businesses across the West Country. Not only does this keep our food miles low and reduce our carbon footprint, but it also means supporting the brilliant local businesses that make this part of the world what it is.
That’s why we’re proud to work with some fantastic West Country companies, including Henry & Joe’s Chai Company, Exmoor Tea, Bristol Syrup Company and Foundation Coffee Roasters, to name just a few.
In The South-West we leave no mess!
We want to leave the places we visit just as we found them, so keeping waste to a minimum is a big part of how we operate.
We use home-compostable cups and lids, keep our pitch and surrounding areas tidy, and regularly pick up any litter around our pitch. Where event organisers don't provide recycling facilities, we take our recycling away with us so it dosen’t end up in landfill.
We've also introduced a reusable cup scheme, offering customers 10% off their drink when they bring their own cup. A simple way to cut down on single-use cups.
What? You don’t serve cows milk?
We are proudly a 100% plant-based business! That means, no cows milk in our coffee, no eggs in our bakes and no meat in any of our savoury treats. But why?
Simple.
It’s to respect the planet and the animals that live on it. According to Ethical Consumer, 25% of greenhouse gas emissions come from the dairy industry. Plant milks such as Soya or Oat have up to 3 times lower carbon footprint per litre and use 90% less water and land compared to dairy milk. Just a little bit we are doing to help to respect the planet.
Can I use your coffee grounds for my Campervan toilet?
That was the question that was asked at a festival one summer. We naturally obliged and handed over the grounds but that was the first time anyone has used our coffee grounds for their toilet!
That little interaction got us thinking, and we've since started donating our used coffee grounds to composting toilets at festivals, giving them another lease of life rather than simply throwing them away.
Back home, we regularly donate grounds to Moretonhampstead Community Allotment, while Ellie's dad always manages to get his hands on a bag or two. We also love seeing customers take a few bags home with them to put to good use.
We're always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to repurpose our coffee grounds, whether that's skincare, gardening or something a little more out there. If you've got an idea or know of a clever way to give them a second life, we'd love to hear from you!
We’re not done yet!
We're always looking for ways to do things a little better, and we've got a few things in the pipeline for 2027.
We're aiming for over 90% of our suppliers to be based in the South West.
We're looking to buy our ingredients and supplies in bulk, cutting down on unnecessary packaging and reducing the number of deliveries we need.
We're investing in more battery storage and solar capacity to reduce our reliance on generators from festivals.
We're also investing in battery storage and solar panels for our little Suzuki, with the aim of making it completely self-sufficient and able to run without external power.
